SWOLLEN FACE

HOW CAN AN INFLAMMED TOOTH CAUSE SWELLING ON THE FACE?

If the pulp of the tooth is inflammed (because of deep caries lesion or tooth crack), then radiating tooth pain can occur at the area of the tooth supplying nerve.

If the tooth is left untreated, and the pain nearly dissapears, then the tooth is dead. After this the bacterial inflammation can go through the apex of the tooth to the jaw. This acute progress cause the swollen face.

The pain of an inflammed lower tooth can radiate tot he same side of the jaw, even to the are of the ear.

The pain of an inflammed upper tooth can radiate to the same side of the jaw, even to the area of the ear and to the lower part of the orbit.

WHAT CAN CAUSE DENTAL FACE SWELLING

  • In a non root canal treated tooth the microbial infection can spread through the tooth’s apex and cause inflammation in the jaw.

  • In a root canal treated tooth the oral bacteries find a way in to the canal space (through a crack, caries decay) and cause inflammation at the apical root area of the jaw.

HOW TO TREAT TOOTH RELATED SWOLLEN FACE?

  • In case of a non root canal treated tooth: root canal treatment and reconstructuin of the tooth

  • In case of a root canal treated tooth: revision and retreatment of the root canal space, and tooth reconstruction
